What Is a Terrarium (And Why Is Everyone So Obsessed?)

If you’ve been to one of our markets or workshops recently, or since 2021, you’ve probably spotted them… little glass worlds filled with plants, stones, and tiny details 🌱✨

But what actually is a terrarium and why does everyone seem to love them so much?

🪴 So… what is a terrarium? 🪴

A terrarium is essentially a mini indoor garden, usually created inside a glass container.

It can be:

• Open (perfect for succulents and cacti 🌵)

• Closed (better for moss, ferns, and humidity loving plants 🌿)

Each one is carefully layered with:

• Drainage (like stones, pearlite or sand)

• Looe Valley Plants special hand mixed soil suited to the succulents

• Decorative touches (because why not make it beautiful too?)

Think of it as a tiny, self-contained ecosystem, right on your shelf. 🤩

✨ Why is everyone obsessed? ✨

Honestly… once you have one, you’ll get it.

1. They’re low maintenance (perfect for busy lives)

Terrariums don’t need constant attention. 👀

Especially closed ones, they can go weeks without watering!

👉 Ideal if you love plants but don’t always remember to water them (we’ve all been there… 😅)

2. They look amazing anywhere

They’re not just plants, they’re decor pieces.

Pop one on:

• A windowsill

• Your desk

• A bedside table

…and suddenly the whole space feels calmer, fresher, and more “put together”.

3. Each one is completely unique

No two terrariums are ever the same.

From the plants you choose to the layout of stones and textures, every single one has its own personality. That’s what makes them:

4. They’re surprisingly calming to make

There’s something really mindful about building a terrarium.

Layering it up, placing each plant, adding finishing touches… it’s one of those things where you can properly switch off for a bit.

Especially here in Cornwall, we’re surrounded by beautiful landscapes, but it’s nice to bring a little bit of that inside too.
